Ok, so maybe it took a few pregnant hormones, several emails back and forth with my best friend today AND some fireflies, but tonight, as I watched Noah cavorting around the backyard, enjoying the simple pleasure of catching lightning bugs, I realized that I actually can find good things about Lima. I actually said a prayer of thanks as I watched Noah chasing down those glowing bugs... I bet the Lord fell out of His chair when he heard that one! lol It's not like Noah hasn't caught lightning bugs before - I have pictures in his scrapbook from last year and I'm pretty sure we did it the year before that too. So like I said, there had to be some other variables involved here, but whatever the case, I guess it's not a bad thing to just be happy.
Though I grew up in Phoenix, we lived in Dubuque, IA until I was 8 and I spent several summers there as well. Catching lightning bugs was always a special part of those times - I can remember having mayo jars absolutely filled with bugs. We always put holes in the top but usually, by morning, very few of those poor fireflies survived. Noah is more of a "catch-and-release" lightning bug hunter. Anyway, I suppose catching lightning bugs is something that most Midwesterners don't give much thought to... it's just another part of summer like strawberries, sweet corn and fireworks on the 4th of July. But, ask my nephews in Phoenix how many lightning bugs they've caught... not just this summer, but EVER. I can honestly say that I don't recall catching a single lightning bug while living in Phoenix. I could be wrong, but I don't think I am.
So I've rambled on a bit and there are no pictures to go along with this (maybe I'll post one from last year - he was wearing the same shirt even!! lol) but I thought this was an important milestone to share. There are good things about Lima, even if I don't recognize them very often.
And to think it only took a few fireflies in my backyard to remind me of that...

Two Big Announcements!
I think most of my blog readers are already aware of our biggest news, but thought I'd post here because I also know there are a few people I haven't gotten to yet. :) Our biggest news is that we are expecting a baby in late December! Noah is very excited to finally get a baby brother or sister - he has been begging for as long as he knew what a baby brother or sister was. :) I think I had pretty much given up on the idea of another child - after all, I sold just about every baby item we had in last year's garage sale. Good thing it's garage sale season now! And actually, many friends have come through with things to borrow or buy, so I think we'll be all set. Official due date is 12/28/09.
Announcement number two is pretty exciting for Noah as well... last Friday, we got the official letter letting us know that Noah had been accepted into the Arts Magnet at Heritage Elementary School. This means he'll continue to go to his regular school and do regular school work, but will also get 90 minutes each week of Art, Music, Drama and Dance. The Arts Magnet does all kinds of performances and art exhibits all over the community and is really a fabulous program in Lima City Schools.
Good news all around! :)

So much to blog, so little time...
Time to catch up! Where did May go? I think I slept it away.... but now Noah is out of school and it's back to the land of the living for me. :)
Thanks to the McClarens, I have a ton of really great soccer pictures of Noah - he did really well this year, despite an "interesting" coach and a small team. He was much more aggressive this year and actually got his foot on the ball!

We also ventured into the wonderful world of butterflies in May! For Christmas, Noah got a butterfly house and so in late April, we sent away for our caterpillars. They arrived in mid-May and did exactly what they were supposed to do. We had 10 caterpillars and ended up with 10 butterflies! We kept them in our screened-in porch for about a week and this morning, released 6 into our backyard. (little boys are rough on delicate butterflies...) It was fun and I think something we'll do again.
On May 29th, I was invited to go along with Noah's class to Boonshoft Museum in Dayton. Noah and I have made this trip many times but it was fun to go with his classmates. I had 4 kindergarten boys in my group and they kept me moving! Noah was very well behaved - I was a bit concerned about having him in my group, but he did amazingly well - no tantrums and he stayed close to me.
And finally, yesterday, June 3rd, was Noah's LAST day of kindergarten! I really can't believe that the school year is over. They had an awards assembly at school and Noah received the award for Outstanding Art Student (what a surprise!) for his class. Noah (and lots of other kids) also got special recognition for reading skills.
